Toyota has once again topped the sales charts after reaching an equilibrium following the reopening of the flood damaged Prospecton plant which was out of commission for several months. Here is who managed admirable sales over the month of August 2022.

In a report released by naamsa, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa, Toyota managed a whopping 11 138 local and 3 196 export vehicle sales in the month of August 2022. This means that just under one of every four vehicles sold locally was that of the Japanese brand since total monthly sales was tallied at 47 420, 5 887 more than the year before.
Passenger vehicle sales are up by 23,1% in comparison to the year before with 238 844 vehicle sales year to date. Medium trucks and buses as well as heavy trucks and buses also experienced positive growth from the year before with improvements of 4,8% and 9,9% respectively. The light commercial bakkies and mini bus segment was the only one to decline from 2021, with a monthly tally for the month of August 2022 signalled at 4,9% less than the year before.

Toyota were in the mix for the top spot of all segments which include passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles.Ranking 652 units behind Volkswagen in the passenger segment, Toyota still managed 5 753 monthly sales while the light commercial segment had them take the top spot with 5 044 sales – more than double that of second place Nissan who managed 2 058 in the month of August 2022. In the heavy commercial vehicle segment, Toyota sold a total of 99 vehicles, 7 behind Isuzu who enjoyed the top spot.
These sales figures enabled Toyota to convingly take the overall top spot of sales during the month – this is how the Top Vehicle Sales by Manufacturer looks like with local and export numbers consolidated:
- Volkswagen Group SA – 15 882
- Toyota – 14 334
- Suzuki Auto – 4 164
- Hyundai Automotive South Africa – 3 129
- Nissan – 3 238
While Volkswagen Group managed the impressive sales tally, the brand only sold 6 693 units locally while Toyota managed 11 138 which ranked them on top of local sales for the month of August 2022.
