The motorcycle market in India has shown tremendous growth in 2021 when compared to 2020. The average sales numbers of the top-10 best-selling motorcycles have grown by 66.62% in March 2021 when compared to March 2020.
It was the Hero Splendor that topped the sales chart yet again by recording a 94.86% growth in sales, amounting to 2,80,090 units in March 2021, compared to the March 2020 sales figure of 1,43,736.
The second place was also taken up by a Hero motorcycle, the Hero HF Deluxe. Despite being mechanically identical to the Hero Splendor and yet cheaper, the HF Deluxe recorded an increase of just 25.69% with 1,44,505 units sold in March 2021.
It was Honda’s ‘no-nonsense’ commuter motorcycle – the CB Shine – which took the third spot overall with 1,17,943 units being sold in March 2021 compared to 86,633 units sold in March 2020. With this, it has become the best selling 125cc motorcycle.
Bajaj took the 4th and 5th spot with its Pulsar and Platina respectively. The latter even recorded a 224.61% growth in sales from March 2020’s 21,264 units to this year’s 69,025 units. The Bajaj Pulsar on the other hand recorded 67.14% growth with total sales in March 2021 amounting to 85,999 units.
TVS holds on to the sixth place with its Apache series of motorcycles. 33, 162 units of the TVS Apache were sold in March 2021 which amounts to a growth of 52.37 percent when compared to the 21,764 units sold in March 2020.
Honda has one more motorcycle in the Top-10 list and it is none other than the Honda Unicorn. Despite being at the bottom of the Top-10 list, Honda Unicorn sold 23,235 units on March 21′ compared to just 14,466 units on March 20′.
Hero makes an appearance once again at the 7th spot with the Hero Glamour selling 32,371 units in March 2021. This is an increase of 154.63 percent when compared to the 12,713 units sold in March 2020.
The eighth best-selling motorcycle in India is the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Despite being old and on the verge of receiving a generational update, the sales of the Royal Enfield Classic 350 doesn’t seem to slow down. 31,694 units of the motorcycle were sold in March 2021 which is 30.41 percent higher than the 24,304 units sold in March 2020.
The Hero Passion takes the 9th spot with 30,464 units sold in March 2021 compared to the 17,937 units sold in March 2020. The Honda Unicorn comes in at position number 10 with 23, 235 units sold in March 2021.
March 2020 was when the first lockdown due to the pandemic was imposed. Thanks to the lockdown, sales of vehicles in the last ten days of March 2020 dropped to zero and it stayed that way for a long time. Hence, we saw much better sales numbers in March 2021 thanks to the dealerships being open.
Until the month of March, the year 2021 has certainly been a better year. But it remains to be seen if the same would continue throughout the year, especially with the volatile situation surrounding the pandemic.

Motorcycle sales have without a doubt improved in March 2021 when compared to the same period in 2020. However it remains to be seen if the same growth trajectory continues in April too with lockdowns, curfews and restrictions being imposed across the country.
