As fuel prices rise and political pressure mounts, car manufacturers continue increasing their hybrid lines, including Jeep with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. As the new Jeep plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the Wrangler 4xe has received a lot of attention, especially after President Joe Biden was spotted driving one around town.

While Wranglers have always been popular, especially among outdoor enthusiasts, they have never been known for fuel efficiency. The traditional Jeep Wrangler’s rugged interior and fuel consumption have made it impractical for daily driving. In contrast, the Wrangler 4xe’s hybrid capabilities make it a realistic daily driver. Yet, despite better fuel economy than a traditional Wrangler, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the least fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid SUV on the market.

What are the specifics of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

Jeep lists the Jeep Wrangler 4xe as having a starting MSRP of 54,595, and it has a lot to offer. The Wrangler 4xe maintains the aesthetics of its gas-powered predecessors with a rugged, outdoorsy exterior perfect for offroading escapades.

Edmunds lists the four-wheel eight-speed model as providing 375 horsepower at 470 lb-ft of torque for an enjoyable ride. It also has a 3,500 lb towing capacity and 1,280 lb payload for outdoor adventures. The Wrangler 4xe also has a weather-resistant interior and a drain valve making cleaning a breeze after a day on muddy terrain.

Despite the rugged features, there is a lot of modern technology and luxury comfort to enjoy with the Wrangler 4xe. All models come standard with an 8.4-inch-infotainment system, navigation, and an LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The Wrangler 4xe is also Apple Play and Android Auto compatible.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe has 12 exciting colors to choose from and many upgrades available. Different hard and soft roof options are available for an additional fee, as well as heated seats and mirrors. The standard Alpine audio system is upgradeable to include a sound bar and subwoofers. Other safety, weather, and entertainment upgrades are also available.

Fuel economy ratings of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe | FCA US LLC.

Of course, the most significant difference between a Jeep Wrangler 4xe and other Wranglers is that it is a plug-in hybrid model, allowing advanced fuel economy.

The Wrangler 4xe has a combined EPA of an estimated 49 MPGe. It has a driving range of 370 miles and a 21-mile all-electric range. The battery can be recharged in as little as 2 hours using a Jeep-branded Level 2 charger or in 12 hours using the included Level 1 charger.

While a 49 mpg rating would be excellent when using gas, the Wrangler 4xe only has a combined EPA rating of 20 mpg when not tapping into its electric power. According to Edmunds, that’s the same fuel economy rating as the standard gas-powered Wrangler.

How does the Wrangler 4xe compare to its competition?

Although 49 MPGe might seem like impressive fuel economy, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe pales compared to other consumer brands. The Ford Escape PHEV and the Kia Niro PHEV both have combined EPA ratings over 100 MPGe, according to Edmunds. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime isn’t far behind, with a combined MPGe of 94. Edmunds lists the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as a bit worse in fuel economy, coming in at a combined EPA rating of 74 MPGe. Still, 70 MPGe is far better fuel economy than the Wrangler 4xe’s 49 MPGe.

Although it might appear that the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the worst efficient PHEV on the market, True Car‘s evaluations state some luxury brands’ attempts at PHEVs might be worse. The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV only has a combined EPA of 42 MPGe and starts at $72,250. Likewise, the 2022 Audi Q5 PHEV has had subpar ratings. Depending on the function and features drivers are looking for, there are many options in the PHEV market.
