If you want a new Mazda CX-9, then make haste. This three-row SUV could be discontinued for the larger Mazda CX-90 model. The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is returning for another year, and you don’t want to miss out, even if it did just get more expensive.

2023 Mazda CX-9 | Mazda

The 2023 Mazda CX-9 price starts at $40,025, which is $3,120 over the outgoing model. The price jumped up because the entry-level Sport trim was just discontinued, so the CX-9 Touring is the new standard model. This price includes the $1,275 destination charge.

On a positive note, now this family SUV comes standard with captain’s chairs in the second row, which is great for accessibility. But that means the CX-9 can only seat up to six occupants instead of seven.

Also, the Touring trim now comes standard with LED foglights, a wireless phone charging pad, and a power moonroof.

The CX-9 Touring Plus trim actually costs $510 less than the outgoing model and starts at $42,775. According to Cars.com, it’s the only model that decreased in price. The Carbon Edition costs $850 more.

Last but not least, the top-spec Signature model gained a $900 increase and starts at $49,735. Premium paint colors like Soul Red Crystal Metallic hike the cost to $50,000.

What’s new for the 2023 CX-9?

Not much is changing for the 2023 Mazda CX-9, aside from a few price hikes. It’s primarily a carry-over model and hasn’t been updated since 2016. However, it doesn’t exactly feel outdated compared to rivals yet.

It comes with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Using premium fuel increases these figures to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and you can opt for steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The CX-9 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds.

Plus, all-wheel drive is standard across the entire lineup. When properly equipped, the CX-9 can tow up to 3,500 lbs.

The near-luxury interior features a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, digital gauge cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a wireless phone charging pad, head-up display, ventilated seats, and more.

Is the CX-9 being discontinued?

2022 Mazda CX-9 | Mazda

Rumors suggest that the Mazda CX-9 will be discontinued to make room for the Mazda CX-90. The Mazda CX-50 is the first of three new large SUVs for the United States. It’s like the CX-5, only bigger and more rugged.

While the CX-5 is excellent for daily commutes, the CX-50 has more muscle and is better equipped for off-roading. The CX-90 is expected to be a larger, boxier version of the CX-9 that solves a few issues for families.

For example, the third row will have more passenger and cargo space. The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is currently a little tight, with only space for children in the rear. Plus, the CX-90 might be able to tow more and have a better ground clearance for off-roading.

We should learn more about the Mazda CX-70 and 90 soon. Also, the fate of the CX-9 hangs in the balance, but it will arrive at dealerships this fall.
