When modern-day electric vehicles (EVs) were first introduced to the general public as cars that could feasibly take the place of gas-powered vehicles, many people were skeptical. Early modern EVs initially focused on a small slice of the automotive market: small city cars that could hold a decent amount of cargo and seat four people in a pinch. This initial round of electric vehicles left many people, especially automotive enthusiasts, with a bad taste of what electric cars could be in the future.

In 2022 however, automotive companies are getting closer to mastering the electric vehicle, and with the historic German automaker Audi releasing its lineup of fully electric e-tron cars, we are starting to see the culmination of technological advancements meeting the high standards set by well-established luxury car brands. The newest member of the e-tron family, the Audi e-tron GT, seems to be doing everything correctly when it comes to making a great electric sports sedan.

The 2022 Audi e-tron GT

The 2022 Audi e-tron GT is a fully-electric sports sedan that has been in production since March of 2021. The Audi e-tron GT produces 522 horsepower and can fast charge its battery from 0% to 80% in just under 23 minutes. This battery pack has an EPA-estimated range of 238 miles for this trim level.

The Audi e-tron GT is only half of the story, however. This vehicle is offered in a higher trim level, the Audi RS e-tron GT, which is built for even more power. The RS model can produce 637 horsepower and has a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.1 seconds. This matches the Tesla Model S, which holds an identical 3.1 second 0 to 60 mph time.

Car and Driver tested the Audi e-tron GT

The 2022 Audi e-tron GT was recently tested and reviewed by Car and Driver, where it was praised for its driving experience. According to the automotive outlet, the Audi e-tron GT does everything a regular sports sedan should and feels similar to the gas-powered sports sedan options within the Audi lineup.

The Audi e-tron GT performed similarly to the Porsche Taycan, with good reason. The Taycan and the e-tron GT share the same platform and battery pack. The more conventional interior and driver-friendly handling are unique to the Audi e-tron GT, however, making this a wonderful option for the average buyer who wants a daily driver with some power.

While the e-tron GT did review well with Car and Driver, the upscale RS e-tron GT was not recommended due to its hefty premium price over the base model e-tron GT.

According to Audi, the Audi e-tron GT starts at $102,400 MSRP, while the up-trim Audi RS e-tron GT starts at around $140,000 MSRP. The platform mate of this EV, the Porsche Taycan, starts at $82,700 MSRP, but to get the full Porsche Taycan experience, most upgrade to the Taycan Turbo S, which starts at $185,000 MSRP.

Similarly priced competitors to the Audi e-tron GT include the Tesla Model S, which starts at $104,990, and the Lucid Air at $87,400 for the base model.

And while expensive, Car and Driver says, “Either way, there’s no denying that e-tron GT is a costly proposition. But it is also one of our favorite EVs to drive—and perhaps one of our favorite sports sedans, period.”

The Audi e-tron GT is a wonderful sports sedan that drives and performs with the best in its class, but with the convenience and perks of a fully-electric vehicle. If you are in the market for an EV sports sedan with top-of-the-line performance made by one of the most noteworthy and historic luxury vehicle brands, the Audi e-tron GT may be the perfect vehicle for you.
