The label “game changer” gets thrown around a lot these days, but if there’s one thing for certain, it’s the first generation BMW S 1000 RR most definitely deserved the title back in 2009. BMW just announced the pricing and performance numbers for the third generation S 1000 RR and it looks like the German superbike is only going to get better.

Starting at $16,995, the 2020 BMW S 1000 RR comes with a suite of what are usually optional extras as standard, more power and a significant drop in overall weight. For 2020 you’ll have a 6.5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity, Gear Shift Assist Pro, a hill start assist, four ride modes, and Bosch’s latest and greatest corner ABS and traction control system.

Under the new aerodynamically-minded fairings, the S 1000 RR gains five extra horsepower for a total of 205 hp and loses a mind-numbing 25 lbs, bringing it down to 434 lbs. If you spring for the new M Package, you’ll lose a further seven pounds on top of that. No one would ever say the S 1000 RR is slow, but when 205 horsepower only has to move 427 lbs, there’s no questioning the blinding speed on tap.

The liter-bike category isn’t as popular as it once was due to rising price tags and knee-weakening performance figures — most of the riding population simply can’t tap into 100 percent of what these bikes have to offer. However, to see and experience what BMW created with the new S 1000 RR will be exciting nonetheless. The 2020 BMW S 1000 RR without a doubt qualifies as an incredible feat of modern engineering, but will it be a game changer like the first generation? That remains to be seen.
