It’s hard to beat a used Toyota Camry when it comes to reliability and its ability to do everything well. The 2017 Toyota Camry, the last year of the seventh generation before undergoing a significant redesign for 2018, will turn five years old in 2022. But is a 2017 Toyota Camry a good choice for a used car in today’s market? Let’s find out.

What you need to know about the 2017 Toyota Camry

the 2017 toyota camry is a fuel-efficient used car recommended by consumer reports

2017 Toyota Camry | Toyota

In 2017, Camry buyers enjoyed three engine options, the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 178 horsepower, a 3.5-liter V6 with 268 horsepower, and perhaps the best option if compromising power for fuel economy is acceptable, the 2.5-liter hybrid with 200 horsepower.

Consumer Reports notes that fuel efficiency for the base four-cylinder is subpar at 24 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway. However, the publication liked the available V6 engine’s “quick acceleration,” even though fuel economy dropped three MPG overall. While not as powerful as the V6, the Camry Hybrid drivetrain goes farther on a gallon of gasoline. In fact, it offers up an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in the city and 38 during highway driving.

Reviewing the 2017 Toyota Camry, Consumer reports found that, on average, the cost of a good condition used model runs about $21,000. You can give or take around $2,000 depending on options and trim level. The 2017 Camry received Consumer Report’s top score for reliability and only dropped one point for owner satisfaction, likely due to the car’s popularity along with its average performance, fuel economy, and handling. The Camry’s popularity results in one of Consumer Reports’ strikes against it, noting that “everybody has one.”

Other plusses for the 2017 Camry include its practicality as an all-around sedan with enough space for five people and a large trunk to get the family’s groceries or carry the required gear for a variety of weekend activities. The 2017 Camry also boasts some sought-after standard features, including a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, and a touchscreen radio. Higher trim levels include heated leather seats and automatic climate control.

How is the 2017 Toyota Camry holding up after five years?

Another point in the 2017 Toyota Camry’s favor is that it made Consumer Reports’ list of “Most Satisfying 5-Year-Old Sedans.” While the Camry’s owner satisfaction ratings are less than perfect, they still rank nearly as high as the competition. Ratings for “Driving Experience” and “Styling” are above average, with “Comfort” and “Value” receiving average scores. When asked if 2017 Toyota Camry owners would purchase the same vehicle again, the majority said they would.

Is this used midsize sedan a good car to buy?

It is safe to say that the 2017 Toyota Camry is a good car. The used midsize sedan’s reliability alone makes the car worth considering when shopping for a family sedan. Being patient and thorough when combing through the 2017 models sale ads list to find one with the best options is vital. The upper end of the price range for a well-equipped used 2017 Toyota Camry is around $23,000. Finding a comparable newer car with the same reliability in that price range will prove difficult.
