Top three passenger models all made substantial year-on-year gains last month but overall market tumbles.

There were 8,050 new passenger vehicles registered in July, which was a drop of 19.1 per cent from 9,951 in the same month of last year.

The top model was Toyota’s RAV4 with 690 units for an 8.6 per cent share of the market – it was also 25 per cent more than the 552 sales a year ago.

Mitsubishi’s Outlander, pictured, was second with 685, up 87.7 per cent from 365 in July last year, and Toyota’s Highlander was third on 335, rising 39 per cent from 241.

Completing the top five was the Suzuki Swift on 272 units and Mitsubishi’s ASX with 248.

The Outlander has the most registrations year-to-date at 5,598 units for 8.7 per cent of the market. The RAV4 is second on 3,529 and 5.5 per cent, followed by the Swift with 2,105 and 3.3 per cent.

Toyota was the top marque last month with its 1,770 cars registered accounting for 22 per cent of the market and representing a climb of 30.7 per cent from July 2021.

Next on the list was Mitsubishi with 1,169 units and a 14.5 per cent market share, with its registrations dropping 18.3 per cent from a year ago.

Suzuki, Kia and Hyundai completed the top five with 719, 716 and 556 units respectively.

Mitsubishi remains top of the marques’ ladder year to date on 10,195 units and a 15.8 per cent market share.

Toyota is second with 8,803 registrations and 13.7 per cent, followed by Kia on 6,812 and 10.6 per cent.

Hyundai is on 4,853 and 7.5 per cent and Suzuki have registered 4,554 so far this year for 7.1 per cent of all activity.
