Five official distributors of automotive brands consisting of Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, FUSO, Isuzu and Toyota, have agreed to join forces in an effort to popularize electrified vehicles in Indonesia by experimenting a collaborative demonstration of an electrification ecosystem in Bali

Five official distributors of automotive brands consisting of Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, FUSO, Isuzu and Toyota, have agreed to join forces in an effort to popularize electrified vehicles in Indonesia by experimenting a collaborative demonstration of an electrification ecosystem in Bali. The initiative, named the EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project, aims not only to support the Indonesian government in accelerating carbon emission reduction, but also to expand the introduction and popularization of electrified vehicles as one of the keys of future mass mobility, and to further revitalize the tourism industry sector in Indonesia through ecotourism. The EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project is also expected to support Indonesia’s leadership role within the 2022 G20 meetings, which will be conducted in Bali as well.

The EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project is a form of contribution from 5 automotive brands to take a role in efforts to accelerate carbon emissions reduction in the Indonesian automotive industry. These makers are developing multi-pathways to expand options for reduced emissions transportation. The participating brands have proven technology in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), battery electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) which are powered by electricity, and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) which combine EV and conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) technology to reduce carbon emission without charging. Even ICEs may contribute to carbon reduction through the utilization of biofuel.

This multi-pathway approach aims to make reduced emission vehicles accessible at a large scale, preparing a wide range of options matching different usage conditions, renewable energy sources, various level of charging infrastructure readiness, and customer needs. With this approach, many more customers can contribute to participate in reducing carbon emissions with no one left behind. This EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project of BEV/PHEV demonstration testing is positioned as a part of the total initiative to pave a solid foundation for electrification in Indonesia.

“Through this EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project, we want to emphasize our shared commitment to support government policies in the effort to reduce carbon emissions by developing and popularizing environmentally friendly electrified vehicles. In addition, this Joint project is also a form of our support, as automotive industry players to the government in order to succeed in Indonesia’s presidential position for the G20 meetings in 2022. We designed this collaboration in accordance with the same spirit carried out by Indonesia, namely Recover Together, Recover Stronger, to grow stronger and sustainably. Moreover, one of the important issues that strengthen Indonesia as the host of the presidency is its energy transition to a green economy,” said Susumu Matsuda who is representing Five Automotive brands as a secretariat of this project.

Each brand will participate in the EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project by involving their flagship electrified vehicles. The lineup of the project will encompass both passenger and commercial electrification vehicles.

To accelerate the introduction of electrification technology to the public and develop the right technology to match customer needs, manufacturers need to first set up pilot project activities and prepare the availability of infrastructure such as charging stations to the experimental test of total ecosystem.

The passenger electrification line-up will be used to support mobility within the Nusa Dua area and Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Meanwhile, the commercial line-up will be used to support logistics and will be considered to create a collaborative activity with local businesses in the Bali area.

“We hope that this EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project will be able to support the government’s efforts to develop and support more environmentally conscious transport solutions and enhance ecotourism, especially in Bali. Through this project, we aim to provide an opportunity for people to experience the technology firsthand, and to better understand of an EV mobility ecosystem.” Matsuda said.

The EV Smart Mobility – Joint Project is planned to start from July 2022 in conjunction with various events within the framework of the G20 meeting in Bali. This activity will be a great opportunity for countries who join the G20 related meetings to see the commitment and seriousness of Indonesian government and the national automotive industry in implementing green energy transition policies and welcoming the era of future mobility based on environmentally friendly vehicles or electrification.

Furthermore, H.E. Mr. Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, visited Jakarta at the end of April and confirmed with H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia, to enhance bilateral cooperation, in industries including the automotive sector. The Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Kenji Kanasugi is quoted as follows:

“President Joko Widodo set his high expectation on the automotive sector’s role, including Japanese automakers for positioning Indonesia as a regional hub in a joint press occasion with Prime Minister Kishida. As Indonesia is entering an electrification era in the automotive sector, together with other stakeholders, we would like to seek solution on how Indonesia can accelerate in achieving the carbon neutrality target by maximizing multi-pathway approach as one of the effective measures. We strongly believe that this project will be able to contribute to that direction based on the participants’ long-time experience in Indonesia.”

To fulfill the commitment of reducing CO2 emissions or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29% by 2030, the Indonesian government has launched various policies, including the accelerated popularization of electrified vehicles and the development of related industries. The development of the ecosystem will require close cooperation among various stakeholders including the automotive industry, battery manufacturers, and consumers.
