Here’s a detailed analysis of the state-wise percentage of car and bike ownership in the country. Apart from that, the analysis also shows the stark variation between the neighbouring state.

Goa
Goa has the highest percentage of households that own a car in India at 45.2 per cent. Apart from that, the state also has the highest percentage of households that own a motorcycle at 86.7 per cent.

Kerala
Kerala has the second-highest percentage of households that own a car in India at 24.2 per cent. However, the percentage of households that own a motorcycle is comparatively low at just58.2 per cent.

Jammu & Kashmir
It is surprising to see that Jammu & Kashmir has the 3rd highest percentage of households that own a car at 23.7 per cent. However, only a minor percentage of the household own a two-wheeler at 30.3 per cent.

Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh has the next percentage of households that own a four-wheeler in India at 22.1 per cent. On the other hand, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is also relatively low at 2.3 per cent.

Punjab
Punjab also has a very high percentage of households that own a car at 21.9 per cent, which is very similar to its neighbouring state, Himachal Pradesh. However, unlike in Himachal Pradesh, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is the second-highest in the country at 75.6 per cent.

Nagaland
After Punjab, Nagaland has the highest percentage of households that own a car at 21.3 per cent. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is among the lowest at 16.7 per cent.

Sikkim
Sikkim is one of the smallest states in India, however, the percentage of households that own a car is among the highest at 20.9 per cent. In contrast, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is the lowest at 11.4 per cent.

Delhi
Delhi is among the most polluted cities in India and the percentage of households that own a car stands at 19.4 per cent. However, thanks to the well connected public transport system, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler are relatively low at 53.1 per cent despite having a higher per capita income.

Arunachal Pradesh
The average per capita income of Arunachal Pradesh is above the Indian average and the percentage of households that own a car in the easternmost state is 19.3 per cent. Moreover, almost half the percentage of households own two-wheeler at 4.6 per cent.

Manipur
Despite being a small state and having less than average per capita income, the percentage of households that own a car stands at 17 per cent. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is better than its neighbouring state, Nagaland at 40.8 per cent.

Mizoram
Like the other majority of eastern states, the percentage of households that own a car in Mizoram is also above the national average at 15.5 per cent. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is lower at just 41.5 per cent.

Haryana
Like its neighbouring states such as Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, Haryana also has a relatively high percentage of households that own a car at 15.3 per cent. Moreover, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is also above the national average at 63.3 per cent.

Meghalaya
Meghalaya is some of the most beautiful states in the country and the percentage of households that own a car in Meghalaya stands at 12.9 per cent, whereas the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler stands at 20.9.

Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand is another state where the percentage of households that own a car is higher than the national average at 12.7 per cent. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is less than the national average at just 46.1 per cent.

Gujarat
Gujarat also has an above-average percentage of households that own a car at 10.9 per cent. Moreover, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler in the state is also higher than the national average at 61.1 per cent.

Karnataka
Karnataka also has a very high percentage of households that own a car and two-wheeler despite having good public transport connectivity. In terms of numbers, Karnataka’s percentage of households that own a car stands at 9.1 per cent, whereas the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler stands at 61.1 per cent.

Maharashtra
When we think of Maharashtra, most of us picture the busy streets of Mumbai. However, in reality, Maharashtra’s percentage of households that own a car is at a relatively low 8.7 per cent and the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is barely above the national average at 53.9 per cent.

Rajasthan
Rajasthan’s percentage of households that own a car stands at 8.2 per cent and the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler in the state stands at 66.4 per cent. Both these numbers prove that Rajasthan is en route to better development.

Tamilnadu
Despite the southernmost state having really good GDP numbers, the percentage of households that own a car in the state is equal to the national average at 6.5 per cent. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is above the national average at 6.9 per cent.

Uttar Pradesh
Whether it’s the elections or just a normal day, UP always takes the limelight. In terms of the percentage of households that own a car, UP stands at 5.5 per cent. On the other hand, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler in UP is above the national average at 51.1 per cent.

Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh has an almost similar percentage of households that own a car and motorcycle compared to its neighbouring state, Uttar Pradesh at 5.3 per cent and 51.5 per cent, respectively.

Telangana
Telangana is a newly formed state which has 52 per cent of households that own a car and 55.3 per cent of households that own a two-wheeler.

Tripura
In contrast to its neighbouring states, Tripura has a very low percentage of households that own a car at 4.6 per cent. On the other hand, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is also significantly less at 27.4 per cent.

Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh is next on this list as 4.3 per cent of households own a car. However, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is above the national average at 54.8 per cent.

Jharkhand
The percentage of households that own a car in Jharkhand is among the lowest and the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is also below the national average at just 41.1 per cent.

Andra Pradesh
Despite a very high growth rate, only 2.8 per cent of households own a car in Andra Pradesh and just 47 per cent of households own a two-wheeler in this state. However, the public transport connectivity is more than exceptional.

West Bengal
West Bengal is a relatively small state and the public transport connectivity is also decent. As a result, the percentage of households that own a car stands at just 2.8 per cent and the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler stands at just 28.5 per cent.

Odisha
The percentage of households that own a car in Odisha stands at just 2.7 per cent, whereas the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is marginally better at 43.5 per cent.

Bihar
Though Bihar has been making steady improvements, the percentage of households that own a car is the lowest in India at just 2 per cent. Moreover, the percentage of households that own a two-wheeler is among the lowest in the country at just 27.2 per cent.

The average percentage of households that own a car in India stands at 7.5 per cent, whereas the average percentage of households that own a two-wheeler stands at 49.5 per cent. In comparison, the states which have a higher percentage of car ownership generally have better per capita income. Whereas states with a high percentage of two-wheelers generally have a sub-par public transport facility.
