If you’re commuting to work via LRT or MRT, do plan ahead as Rapid KL has announced that there will be new intervals for the LRT Kelana Jaya (KJ) Line and MRT Kajang Line beginning 26-May 2022.

This is due to upgrading works on the train to ensure better safety and comfort for passengers. With the disruptions that have been ongoing with some of the train services, this is timely news.

For the LRT KJ Line, the frequency is now every 4 minutes during peak hours and every 7 minutes for off-peak hours on weekdays (Monday-Friday). For weekends and public holidays, the intervals take 7 minutes for the entire day.
The previous shortest interval between trains was 2.5 minutes for weekday peak hours.

Meanwhile, the MRT Kajang Line’s frequency is every 6 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes for off-peak hours on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, the trains would arrive every 10 minutes for the whole day. The shortest interval between MRT trains was 4 minutes on weekday peak hours.

Following the news of multiple breakdown issues with the trains, especially on the LRT KJ Line, Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong, announced that the line is currently undergoing a ‘mid-life refurbishment’ worth RM 800 million.

The upgrade works would see repairs and overhauls on 28 Bombardier 818 train sets and receive 19 new train sets in Q4 2023. The KJ Line is one of the most frequently used train lines with an average daily ridership of 350,000 passengers.
