proton x50, x70, exora lead segment sales charts in first four months of 2022

Proton has taken to its social media channels to announce that the X50, X70, and Exora are their respective segment’s best-selling models for the first four months of 2022.

The Proton X50 takes the crown in the B-segment SUV class, with 8,730 units sold year-to-date; the X70 leads the B-segment SUV pack with 5,768 units, while the Exora claims the top spot in the C-segment MPV space with 1,048 units sold in the first four months of 2022.

These figures are propped up by the company’s April sales performance, where Proton also claimed sales leadership for the three models in their respective segments with 1,554 units of the X50, 1,530 units of the X70, and 301 units of the Exora sold – in spite of the chip shortage issue that has plagued the national carmaker’s production capabilities.

Overall sales for Proton in April 2022 fell by more than 32% when compared to the previous month. As a result, its monthly market share also dropped to an estimated 15.6% (from 18.6% in March), although the company says that its overall year-to-date market share remains unchanged at 17%, and the three models are a testament to that.

As for the entry-level A-segment sedan, Proton’s best-selling Saga still trails behind the Perodua Bezza in terms of market share, despite selling 4,579 units in April – the last full month of sales for the pre-facelift model.

With the new 2022 Proton Saga MC2 facelift announced earlier this month, the national carmaker is hoping that the creature comfort upgrades will help the entry-level sedan reclaim the top spot in its segment, although that is still ultimately dependent on overcoming the chip shortage issues.

“The situation is still uncertain for the rest of the year and the global car industry is under pressure from rising costs, but the company is working on countermeasures against these issues to ensure our customers get the best products and value in Malaysia and abroad,” said Proton Deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah, adding that the company is expecting a “quick turnaround” in the coming months.

In related news, Proton announced at the launch of 2022 Saga that it will be unveiling three brand-new models in the next two years. Curious as to which models they were referring to? Check out our “investigative” report here!
