“I always do cars a little differently and post them on my Instagram as the ‘AP spec’ cars,” Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger told TG. “We came up with the idea to really go old fashioned and historically correct and do it white over green.”

Welcome then, to the ‘old fashioned’ and ‘historically correct’ colours of the gorgeous 1972 Carrera RS aside the striking new 911 GT3 RS. Speaking to TopGear.com, Preuninger – together with Porsche North America boss Kjell Gruner – spoke of the team’s desire to give American RS fans something unique.

“It’s a collaboration project,” Gruner said, “so we’re thinking about taking the old car as inspiration. We’re looking at three areas – what we can do on the outside, thinking about what you can do in the interior and what can you do beyond the car.

“It’s literally a work in progress, it’s not finished yet,” he added.

Porsche GT boss: Nürburgring lap times *do* matter

Preuninger said if the team did it, it’d look “very similar” to the old car, and in fact pointed to his early fascination with that lovely old 911. “As a car enthusiast growing up, my walls were plastered with models that I was particularly fond of,” he said. “One of the most influential was the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. As a young kid it captured my imagination and even today it puts a smile on my face.

“That’s where the styling inspiration of the 996 GT3 RS came from, which was one of my first projects at Porsche. At the time, that car felt totally extreme so colours nodding to the forefather made sense. It’s a very emotional moment for me to pay tribute to the first 911 RS model with our most extreme and capable 911 GT3 RS yet.”

No word on how many Porsche will build, how much or even when we’ll see the finished product, but it’s definitely coming. Watch this space…
