After a bit of visual flair in the compact crossover segment? The handsome Opel Mokka will satisfy your passion for stylish and fashion-forward design, but does it have other talents that impress? We spent seven days in the GS Line model to find out if it's a solid long-term investment.

In this article:

The new Mokka is a headturner and will change the perception of our brand! With the Mokka, we are reinventing Opel and introducing our design of the next decade. It shows everything the brand stands for today and in the future: the Mokka is fun, efficient and innovative in all respects. In addition, it perfectly embodies the Opel brand values – exciting, approachable, German. – Michael Lohscheller, Opel

Need a compact SUV that doesn’t blend into the background? Looking at the previous Opel Mokka, you’d scarcely believe this new, beefy-looking Mokka with its muscle car vibe is related to it. When we attended the local launch in April, we walked away impressed, but I knew I needed some quality time in it.

Styling

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

Our blue GT Line model looked ready to take on the urban jungle and beyond in its almost electric blue paint job which is enhanced by the GS Line-specific black roof that seems to float above the car, but it’s the new black Opel Vizor and its concave placement on the Mokka’s nose instead of the normal, blingy grille, that attracts the most attention and makes the Mokka look menacing and muscular.

Black wheel cladding (with blacked-out wheels) and narrow LED taillights with modern Mokka lettering along the boot-lid add serious street cred. It’s a head-turner and many eyes followed us when we stopped at school, at the garage for fuel or at the mall for grocery shopping. A few curious members of the public even came closer to ask questions: Is it still German? How much does it cost? And, how does it drive?

New vs used Opel Mokka: What are the top 3 differences?

Space & Interior

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

As one expects from the Stellantis group, the Mokka’s black interior, especially in GS Line trim, is a classy one, but why they went the faux carbon-fibre route for the partial dashboard and door trim is beyond me, as it certainly takes away from the cabin’s general upmarket ambience. The large central touchscreen (which is angled towards the driver’s viewpoint) and digital cluster along with glossy black details along the centre console look slick and the graphics are crisp and clear. Front passengers can take turns charging their phones wirelessly on the charging pad below the air-conditioning controls.

Another interior highlight is the small gear selector switch instead of the usual automatic transmission gear lever design that is used in most automatic cars. You just give the small switch a nudge to select your gear of choice, and off you go.

While there’s plenty of space up front, the rear passengers don’t have major legroom, and that’s why it’s really better suited to very small families. The central rear seat is raised slightly so three kiddos will be able to fit in side by side, but the rear windows curve upwards so outward visibility isn’t fantastic. My two teenagers were not bothered by this at all – they were much more excited by the two USB ports in the rear where they could plug in their phones.

The boot, at 310 litres, is a bit on the tight side too, so don’t expect the Mokka to fulfil any camping car/carpooling duties. It’s also a pity the rear door bins are so much smaller than the ones in front, which leads me to believe the Mokka is probably aimed at trendy urban couples rather than small families anyway.

Comfort & Convenience

The Mokka, especially in GS Line trim, is filled to the brim with features for everyday user-friendliness. In the GS Line, the driver’s seat is 6-way adjustable and this derivative gets a full leather interior. The driver’s seat even has a massaging function.

The 10-inch Itellilink colour touchscreen in the GS Line is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and gets built-in satnav as standard. The quality from the sound system is rather good too – teamed with the well-insulated cabin, listening to your favourite tunes as you drive is a real joy, even when you’re out on the highway.

The 12-inch digital driver’s display behind the steering wheel is easy to read and you can choose how the display should look. All models have climate control, and heated front seats are a nice little luxury which is standard across the board.

Performance

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

The turbocharged, 1.2-litre Puretech engine (96kW) which is also found in an array of other Stellantis products, is a little gem. First off, you have that cheeky growl from the 3-cylinder engine, and when you ‘put foot’, as they call it, the powerplant springs to life. The front-wheel-driven Mokka clings to the tarmac around corners and is a nimble and fleet-footed little thing, and sportier to drive than you’d imagine. Steering is light but quite direct. I deliberately took the scenic routes which involved some twisty bits in the week I had the Mokka at my disposal.

Driving modes are part of the deal and in the hope to conserve petrol, I mostly stayed in Eco Mode, but Sport can be engaged if you’re keen on a more responsive throttle. The Mokka will sprint from 0 – 100 km in under 10 seconds (9.2 to be exact). It’s not afraid of hills or mountain passes and despite its crossover ground clearance, there isn’t any body roll.

Fuel Economy

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

The Mokka’s fuel economy varied from 6.4 litres per 100 km on the highway to 8 l/100 km in the “city” so keeping that Eco setting activated in town is a must. A word of warning though, you are going to want to drive everywhere in the Mokka because it’s such fun to pilot.

Safety

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

Apart from the standard-across-the-board safety spec such as 6 airbags, lane keep assist, child locks, rear privacy glass, Isofix, LED headlights, front foglamps and park distance control in the front and rear, GS models have features such as adaptive cruise control that functions between 30 km/h and 180 km/h, high beam assist, matrix headlamps, and automatic emergency braking. This will bring the Mokka to a complete stop if its speed doesn’t exceed 30 km/h – think of a cyclist in heavy traffic or a pedestrian running in front of the Mokka at a busy shopping mall – that’s a potential lawsuit/criminal charge avoided, right there.

Price

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

The Mokka is one of the priciest crossovers in the segment and caters to the more discerning compact SUV buyer.

The entry-level Mokka 1.2T Elegance, at R477 900, goes up against some fierce competition such as the Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0TSI 85kW Highline R-Line at R478 100 and the brilliant diesel Kia Seltos 1.5CRDi EX+ at R477 995.

The GS Line model is a steep R527 900, and pricier than the Subaru XV 2.0i-S ES (R520 000) as well as the Mazda CX-30 2.0 Carbon Edition at R524 900. The Toyota C-HR 1.2T Luxury, the flagship model, costs R554 500. So, much as I love how the Mokka looks and drives, its price tag is a bit of a deterrent for me, especially because it’s such a small car with so little boot space and room in the rear. For even less money than the Mokka GS Line model, you can buy a baseline Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4TSI with 110kW from the segment above (which only costs R558 900). But the Tiguan isn’t as cool as the Mokka! The other issue with Opels (and most Stellantis products) is that parts can sometimes be pricey and aren’t always readily available.

Verdict

android, opel mokka 1.2t gs line (2022) review

The well-rounded Mokka is a stunner in the metal, and driving it is a fun and absolutely fuss-free experience. It’s comfortable, cool, quiet inside and overall a great place to be. If you have the money and you’re more concerned with style than value, I can recommend it – but if you want serious bang for your buck, rivals such as the practical Kia Seltos and Toyota C-HR (another looker in the segment) are more sensible. If you’re buying with your heart rather than your senses, however, you will get many miles of smiles out of the Mokka.
