The Maserati MC20 supercar is taking the world by storm. It’s getting all sorts of astounding critical acclaim, and its looks speak for themselves. Truly, this is the greatest thing auto enthusiasts have seen from Maserati in quite some time. However, the newest variant, the Cielo, makes the MC20 driving experience a tad bit sweeter. Get ready for some wind in your hair!

The Cielo is a remarkable achievement in engineering across the board

Maserati recently put out a press release revealing the all-new MC20 Cielo to the world. Cielo is the Italian word for “Sky.” This name is, of course, in reference to the fact that it has a convertible roof. However, the Cielo is more than just a convertible variant of its coupe brother. It’s got some pretty awesome technology worth delving into.

For one, most convertible cars are quite a bit heavier than their coupe counterparts. This is because additional chassis reinforcement is necessary when taking away the rigidity of the roof. However, the Maserati MC20 Cielo manages this feat while only adding 143 pounds to the overall weight of the car. For reference, Carscoops reports that a Huracan Spyder weighs 275 pounds more than a coupe thanks to chassis reinforcement.

Additionally, the Cielo has some awesome features. For one, even with the convertible top up, MC20 Cielo drivers can enjoy the sky views thanks to its electrochromic smart glass technology. With the press of a button, one can change the glass from opaque to transparent. Putting the top down is nearly as quick, too. Maserati reports that the MC20 Cielo’s roof opens or closes in just 12 seconds.

Just like the coupe variant, the MC20 Cielo features a full carbon fiber chassis. So, despite the added weight from convertible reinforcement, the Cielo still maintains a solid power to weight ratio. Maserati describes it as a perfect balance of sportiness and luxury.

Other tech advancements include autonomous emergency braking, parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera. Additionally, an optional sound system crams 12 speakers into the Cielo’s cabin.

Maserati has yet to reveal the power and performance specs of the MC20 Cielo

Though specifics aren’t provided, the Maserati press release states that it uses the V6 Nettuno engine just like the coupe.

According to Autoevolution, Maserati describes this V6 engine as being solely developed and built by Maserati. The coupe version has a remarkable power output of 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. This power output comes thanks to its pair of turbochargers.

Additionally, the coupe uses an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Likely, the Cielo will use this component as well.

The coupe has an advertised top speed of over 200 miles per hour and can sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. Hopefully, then, the MC20 Cielo can keep these specs, too.

Overall, both the MC20 and MC20 Cielo are a monumental reflection of Maserati’s self-advertised re-birth from the year 2020. While Maserati has been present, the iconic company hasn’t put a car this exciting into production since the legendary MC12.

From the mid-engine layout to the butterfly doors going straight up, there’s plenty to love with the MC20. So, adding a convertible version really makes this already delectable vehicle that much sweeter.
