Honda has been waiting to share technical data with customers. Maybe they waited too long.

When Honda pulled the cover off of the new FL5-generation Civic Type R earlier this summer, the automaker refused to share many technical specifications with the buying public. Thanks to one member of the Civic XI forum, important details related to the car’s powertrain output and curb weight leaked online by way of a brochure ahead of Honda’s planned announcement.

This is not the first time that information about the new Type R has been published from a leaked dealer brochure, with a similar document making the forum rounds last month. In fact, this recent leak, initially posted by forum user Rainy4s, even manages to verify some of the earlier claims. More specifically, the Japanese document claims the car will make 326 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque with the Type R’s returning 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot. These are the same figures that started to appear online following the leak back in July, which also fall in line with Honda’s statements about improved engine performance for the FL5-generation. Outside of the U.S. market, the outgoing FK8-generation Type R produced 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Buyers in the States saw their car’s detuned to just 306 hp. If this figure is accurate, it would make the new Civic the most powerful vehicle to ever wear the Type R nameplate.

The brochure also contained information related to the Type R’s curb weight, which was listed at just over 3152 lbs. During Car and Driver testing, the base curb weight of the outgoing model was measured at 3071 lbs, which represents a difference of 81 lbs in the generational shift. That figure is liable to change slightly before the cars hit the U.S. however, as different regions measure curb weight differently, and other market-t0-market variations either raise or lower the basic figure.

The wheelbase has also been stretched by 1.4-inches, for a total length of 107.7-inches. Honda has reportedly tweaked the final drive ratio, swapping from 4.111 to a 3.842 gearset. Sixth is the only individual gear that sees a ratio tweak, now 0.734 as opposed to the outgoing model’s 0.735. The final drive tweak should help the Type R pick up some top-end speed, though we’ll have to wait for the automaker to confirm that tidbit.

Most of the images correlating this information about the FL5 generation Type R have been scrubbed from the blog thread by the original poster, who cited anger about the leak coming from some folks over in Japan. The leaked images from July do remain in the thread, as does a single page of the newer brochure with the information.

While we always expected the 2023 Honda Civic Type R to deliver in the performance department, this new info has to only get fans more excited. The previous car was one of the most competent front-drivers ever put to the track, and we can’t imagine this new one will be any less impressive.
