If you ever get pulled over by police, it’s important to follow their rules and obey their commands. It’s also important not to stray from those rules and commands, especially if you’re taking part in a field sobriety test. A Florida woman found that out the hard way when she tried to get out of a D.U.I by performing an Irish Folk Dance instead of doing what she was told.

According to WFLA.com, “Deputies said Amy Harrington, 38, of Madeira Beach, rear-ended another vehicle roughly one mile from her home on April 27.” When the deputies arrived on the scene, they reported that her eyes were bloodshot, watery, and glassy with dilated pupils. Those are obvious signs of intoxication.

Shortly after, the officers conducted a field sobriety test consisting of the usual “walk the line” exam to test Harrington’s balance and reflexes. However, according to the arrest documents, she allegedly “struggled to follow instructions and was unsteady on her feet, almost falling.”

A newly released video show Harrington’s dance demonstration

A video has since surfaced online, which shows parts of Harrington’s field sobriety demonstration. In the video, the deputy can be heard telling Harrington to walk the line. She states, “Do you want to pay attention to my instructions?”

Harrington replies, “Yeah, well, you sound like my ballet coach.” She then proceeds to take five steps before breaking out into an Irish folk dance/ballet routine.

“That wasn’t good,” the officer quipped. The NY Post reported that Harrington then “proceeded to break into ‘multiple ballet and Irish folk dance moves’ according to the police.” In the video, she can be seen waving her arms and dancing around in front of the police officer.

We’re sure that, in her mind, this public display of bad choreography would somehow get her off the hook, but it didn’t. Instead, the police ended up taking her down to the station and booking her on a D.U.I charge. She refused further testing, which is the second time she has done so since a separate arrest in Pinellas County in 2019.

What to do if you get pulled over by a cop

While Harrington hopefully learned her lesson that fateful, we can all take something away from that video. Aside from not doing an Irish folk dance, here are a few other tips to follow if you ever get pulled over by a cop:

  • Be cautious and drive slow: When a cop pulls you over, remember to drive slow and pull over cautiously to the side of the road.
  • Be as polite as possible: While it’s not a good feeling to get pulled over, withhold your anger and emotions as much as possible and remain calm and polite. Being nice will get you farther than being mean.
  • You can decline the field sobriety test: Field sobriety tests are notoriously bad at determining sobriety. Liberty Law Center states that you can decline the field sobriety test and let the police know that you will take the chemical sobriety test instead.

It’s never fun getting pulled over. However, if you ever do, you should always remain calm whether or not you’re in the right. Also, remember to keep the ballet or Irish jigs at home. Otherwise, you may end up doing them in jail.
