With electrified cars now coming in all shapes and sizes – and available to suit every budget – we’ve named the best models in every class. Here we look at the best used hybrid large SUV...
The Volvo XC60 T8 is your cool, calm and collected relative who, when provoked, can unexpectedly rip you a new one. That’s right: this large SUV’s conservative exterior hides some serious power: 401bhp in total.
Its grunt comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine (which is both turbocharged and supercharged) and an electric motor. The T8 has a 0-62mph time of 5.1sec – not bad for a two-tonne-plus SUV.
Fuel economy is far from poor, either, because the T8 averages 134.5mpg officially. Of course, use all of the available performance and it won’t return anywhere near that, but running costs remain reasonable. CO2 emissions are relatively low as well, at just 56g/km.
What isn’t pared down is the T8’s level of equipment. Even entry-level Inscription trim gets climate control, keyless start, cruise control, heated leather seats and automatic lights and wipers. The other option is R-Design, which is generally cheaper to buy used and has sportier styling, bigger wheels and tinted windows. You also get sports suspension for a slightly firmer ride, but it brings tidier handling too.
True to Volvo form, the XC60 is an impressively practical SUV, with plenty of passenger space front and rear, plus a boot that’s a good size and shape.
It also has some of the most advanced safety features in the class; it scored the maximum five stars in Euro NCAP’s safety tests, coming away with a brilliant 98% adult occupant protection score and 95% for safety assistance.
Couple all of that with a classy, plush interior and extremely attractive prices (starting at £32,000) and a used XC60 T8 looks even more appetising. We’ve chosen it over its two main premium rivals, the excellent Audi Q5 55 TFSIe and BMW X3 xDrive30e, because the XC60 is both cheaper to buy and offers stronger performance.
