With electrified cars now coming in all shapes and sizes – and available to suit every budget – we’ve named the best models in every class. Here we look at the best used electric family car...

Lots of battery-powered cars are styled to make sure you know just how futuristic they are. Not the Volkswagen e-Golf, though. It’s a hatchback that recognises not all buyers are looking for a spaceship on wheels. Many just want a familiar, practical package that happens to have a motor, not an engine.

The version that scores best for that everyday usability – and our e-Golf of choice – is the revised, 2018-onwards model. As part of an update that year, it was given an enhanced battery to increase its official range from 124 miles to 186. Those figures were measured under a testing regime that has since been superseded, but you can expect to see around 120 miles in the real world, which should be enough for most city dwellers.

The e-Golf, of course, is basically a Volkswagen Golf, so we hardly need to tell you how well suited it is to family car duties. It can accommodate five people with ease, and if you’ve ever owned a regular Golf, you’ll know how practical it is. The batteries under the e-Golf’s boot floor do reduce luggage capacity slightly, but you still get a useful 341 litres.

All versions are well equipped, with two-zone climate control, all-round parking sensors and a 9.2in touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav that points out charging opportunities. A DAB radio, USB socket and Bluetooth connectivity are included, too.

The e-Golf may not be able to match its main rival, the Nissan Leaf e+, for range, but its reliability record is more confidence-inspiring and it has a more premium feel inside. It’s also more refined to travel in, with less wind and road noise, and has a far more comfortable ride.

Prices for our recommended post-2018 variant start at £18,500, making it relatively affordable to buy as all-electric family cars go. That only adds to the e-Golf’s merits as an approachable means of making the switch to electric car ownership.
