electric car awards 2022: best electric executive car

It’s safe to say that a lot has happened in our lives since 2019. Many of us will have moved house, changed jobs, started a family or even boosted our immune system. Thankfully, some things have remained constant, and the Tesla Model 3 is a prime example of this.

In that time since its debut in the UK, the Model 3 has built up such a strong reputation that in some months this year it’s been the best-selling car overall, despite being far from cheap to buy and having a traditional saloon body (as opposed to being a trendier SUV).

Part of the reason for this popularity is that the Model 3 pushes the boundaries of what electric cars are capable of, especially when it comes to range. Officially, our recommended Long Range version can cover up to 374 miles between charges; that’s farther than most other EVs can go and gives it an advantage over rivals such as the BMW i4 (which has a range of up to 358 miles) and Polestar 2 (341 miles at best).

True, interior quality isn’t a match for that of the i4 and Polestar 2, but it’s far from shabby these days. And despite the restricted boot access caused by its saloon-style opening, the Model 3 is far more practical than most traditional executive cars. Not only is there enough room inside to accommodate four six-footers comfortably, but the front and rear boots are large enough to accept an astonishing 10 carry-on suitcases between them. That’s three more than the i4 and Jaguar I-Pace can hold.

The fact that the Model 3 has these practical considerations well covered doesn’t mean it’s dull to drive, though. The Long Range model (which isn’t even the quickest version) sprints from 0-60mph in just 4.2sec, trouncing the equivalent i4 eDrive40 and Polestar 2.

The Model 3 handles very well by EV standards, too, with quick steering and high levels of grip making it jolly good fun when you swap the motorway for a twisty country road. And while the firm suspension helps keep body lean in check, ride comfort hasn’t been sacrificed in the process.

What really makes the Model 3 stand out, though, is how easy it is to charge on longer journeys, thanks to Tesla’s dedicated Supercharger network. The speed, reliability and user-friendliness of these chargers make the Model 3 (and other Teslas) easier to live with than other EVs.

The rapid charging rate means you can get a 10-80% top-up in around half an hour, so you won’t have to stop for long, either. And while you take a break, the Model 3 allows you to play computer games and watch Netflix on the huge infotainment screen. Gimmicky, yes, but you’ll never be bored.
