A convertible model of the Hongguang Mini EV developed by the joint venture between SAIC, General Motors, and Wuling, will reportedly go on sale on September 1.
The standard version of the Hongguang Mini EV was unveiled all the way back in early 2020 by the joint venture formed between Chinese state-owned automaker SAIC, American automotive giant General Motors, and Chinese automaker Wuling Motors.
The Hongguang Mini EV was then launched later in 2020 and followed it up with the Mini EV Macaron in early 2021 which was priced between RMB37,600 and RMB43,600, converting to around $A8,000 and $A9,000 at current exchange rates.
Unsurprisingly, given its pricing and ability to seat two or four people depending on whether you fold down the rear bench seat, the Hongguang Mini EV quickly became the world’s most popular electric vehicle, overtaking the Tesla Model 3.
Fast-forward to this week, and SAIC-GM-Wuling announced through their WeChat account that a convertible version of the Hongguang Mini EV will go on sale on September 1.
According to CnEVPost, who first reported the news, the model will be launched by Wuling in association with American monthly fashion magazine, Harper’s Bazaar.
Young Chinese actress Zhou Ye will reportedly be the first owner of a convertible Hongguang Mini EV, unsurprisingly, given she is also the advertising spokesperson for the campaign.
“The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV convertible combines a liberal-romantic design language with a square mini body in a unique style,” said SAIC-GM-Wuling in its WeChat announcement.
Available in blue, green, and black, while the soft-top canopy option will also be offered in red and black, the Hongguang Mini EV is expected to be called the Mini EV Cabrio and is based on the Mini EV Macaron.
The Mini EV Cabrio will reportedly measure in at 3,059mm in length, 1,521mm in width and 1,614mm in height, has a wheelbase of 2,010mm, and will be offered in two range options, 200- and 300-kilometres with pricing varying between RMB40,000 and RMB60,000, which converts to around $A8,400 to $A12,500.
