Industry organisation urges government to mandate it own voluntary system to reduce pollution from light fleet.

Car manufacturers in Australia are maintaining their call for the federal government to adopt the industry’s own voluntary emission-reduction scheme for the country’s light-vehicle fleet.
Tony Weber, chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), says now is the perfect time for the new Albanese government to mandate the scheme which has been in place on a voluntary basis since 2020.
“The Australian public has made it clear that tackling climate change and reducing emissions is a primary concern,” says Weber, pictured.
“As an industry, we are ready to work with the new government to transition the industry’s voluntary CO2 scheme to a federally mandated one.”
Weber adds any government-mandated scheme must be technology agnostic, realistic, and allow manufacturers to bring efficient, low-emissions technologies to Australia across a broad range of engine options.
“Our members are bringing low-emissions technologies to market that encompass internal combustion, hydrogen, hybrid and full battery-electric systems.
“All of these technologies will play a role in our short to medium-term journey towards zero emissions and full electrification. Our message to the government is simple – give us the target, we will give you the technology.”
