A better electric bike for riding off-road and on alike.
Ever since they dropped their first bike on the world in 2018, Swedish electric motorcycle maker Cake has been baking up some of the wildest, most innovative designs in the two-wheeled space. Now, Cake is bringing a new addition to the range: a street-legal version of the capable Kalk Ink dubbed the Cake Kalk Ink SL.
Like its not-ready-for-the-streets sibling, Kalk Ink SL uses the same 6061 aluminum frame/swingarm combo, battery pack and drivetrain as the Kalk OR and Kalk& models. What differentiates the Inks from the rest is their tough bodywork and suspension that make it better-suited for trail-bashing: a tough-but-light motocross-style front suspension, a simple non-linkage suspension out back, tough 19-inch wheels, and black plastic fenders and bodywork.
As for what makes the SL street-legal but not its twin? Well, like the variations between fast food in America and Europe, it’s the little differences: turn signals, a headlight and rear brake lights, a foot brake, a license plate holder and an LED driving display. The Kalk SL’s gearing is also slightly longer, enabling it to blast past 63 miles per hour at full tilt. (Don’t expect to get the full three hours of riding time if you have it pegged at that speed, though.)
If all this sounds right up your alley, you can have a Cake Kalk Ink SL of your own as soon as July — if, of course, you’re willing to pay the $10,500 price. You don’t have to fork that all over right now, though; a $200 deposit is all you need to plop down at the moment. Considering you’re liable to have the coolest, greenest and most unusual-looking bike on the trail as a result, that sounds like a deal.
