The 2017 Honda Fit | Honda

When Consumer Reports was rounding up reliable used cars with good fuel economy, the 2017 Honda Fit checked all of the boxes. Owners report getting 35 mpg overall, and Consumer Reports gave it the green choice accolade. With plenty of space inside despite being a compact hatchback. Consumer Reports gave it high marks for reliability and road test performance.

The 2017 Honda Fit received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Honda didn’t equip the fit with any additional safety features, but it is still a reliable used car with good fuel economy.

Price Range: $16,600 – $19,625

Check out the Hyundai Elantra for a reliable used car with good fuel economy

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is simple but delivers on its promises. The Elantra is a good choice for buyers with an owner-reported 32 mpg overall and a roomy cabin. It scored well on the road test and has average reliability, but the price makes up for it. Hyundai also added Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Consumer Reports suggests trying to find one with forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and blind-spot warning (BSW), if possible. The Elantra is a good option for those looking for a reliable used car with good fuel economy.

Hyundai’s Elantra came with daytime running lights and a rearview camera, an important technology. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave this model year the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

Price Range: $15,025 – $17,150

Buyers can opt for the sedan or the hatchback for the Mazda 3

Owners report getting about 30 mpg from the 2017 Mazda 3. Consumer Reports got 33 mpg overall from the automatic transmission option during testing, while the manual version got 32 mpg. Consumer Reports gave it high scores for the road test and reliability. This Mazda was available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback. If you can find the Touring or Grand Touring version, that comes with BSW and AEB as standard safety features.

The IIHS also gave the 2017 Mazda the Top Safety Pick Plus award. It received high scores on the IIHS crash tests as well as the ones from the NHTSA. The NHTSA gave this reliable used car a five-star overall safety rating.

Price Range: $15,900 – $18,450

Consumer Reports tests each car, truck, and SUV thoroughly before giving it a score. Reliability is important, especially when it comes to finding a used car. Don’t be afraid to expand your search a bit if you aren’t finding options locally. Most dealerships will ship a vehicle for a small fee.
