Yes, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is an excellent full-size truck to consider with a brand new look and interior design. It has stout engine options, has a long list of standard features, and is even better for off-roading.
However, the team at Cars.com discovered that the new Toyota Tundra isn’t perfect. While they point out a lot of excellent Tundra features, they also found a few areas where the truck falls short compared to rivals.
1. The Tundra needs more muscle
The 2022 Toyota Tundra can tow up to 12,000 lbs, which is an improvement. The previous generation maxes out at 10,200 lbs. Also, the Tundra can carry a payload of up to 1,940 lbs, while the 2021 model can only carry up to 1,730 lbs.
While the Tundra got stronger, it didn’t catch up to its competitors. For example, the 2022 Ford F-150 can tow up to 14,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,238 lbs.
The Ram 1500 sits on the weaker end of the spectrum and can tow up to 12,750 lbs. It can carry a payload of up to 2,325 lbs, though.
2. The Tundra is behind on tech
While the 2022 Toyota Tundra finally got an updated infotainment system with modern features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it still lags behind the competition. Also, the massive 14.0-inch touchscreen is almost too big.
Anyways, competitors such as the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500 offer a bit more safety tech. They have lane centering assist, which takes things a bit further than simply having lane departure warning.
Also, where is the hands-free driving tech? The F-150 is working on Blue Cruise, and General Motors is starting to implement Super Cruise hands-free driving tech. But at least the Tundra has an automatic trailer reverse system.
3. The Toyota Tundra could have a better transmission

According to the team at Cars.com, the 2022 Toyota Tundra has a disappointing 10-speed automatic transmission. It can be slow to downshift, and the upshifts can seem a bit clunky. This makes it difficult to pass others.
The hybrid system has a bit of a delay to save fuel, which can take some getting used to. However, the gas-powered engine provides a smoother performance.
With the Tundra, the standard twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine cranks out 355 hp and 379 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the i-FORCE MAX engine that’s paired with an electric motor for 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.
With the hybrid engine, the Tundra can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds. Overall, the Tundra is a lot better than the previous generation. Toyota fans will be pleased with the extra power and updated tech. But it still needs to catch up to more advanced rivals.
