Being the new car on the block can be rough, especially if you’re a luxury EV. The standards for what makes a luxury electric vehicle worthy of purchase are getting higher by the day, and it appears the new Genesis GV60 has some steep competition. Even so, here are three advantages the 2023 Genesis GV60 has over the BMW i4.

1. BMW can’t top the Genesis warranty

3 advantages the 2023 genesis gv60 has over the bmw i4

2023 Genesis GV60 | HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY

BMW offers a pretty stellar warranty compared to most competitors, giving a mere three years or 36,000 miles depending on which milestone your vehicle hits first. BMW is going above and beyond by offering four years or 50,000 miles.

That would normally be tough to beat, but it’s important to remember that Genesis is part of the Hyundai Motor Group, which tends to offer some of the best warranties on the market. In this case, you’ll get five years, or 60,000 miles, according to Consumer Reports.

Other key parts of the Genesis GV60 warranty include 10 years/100,000 miles for the drivetrain, seven years/unlimited miles for corrosion, five years/unlimited miles for roadside aid, and three years/36,000 miles for maintenance.

The BMW i4 warranty also includes four years/50,000 miles for the drivetrain, 12 years/unlimited miles for corrosion, four years/unlimited miles for roadside aid, and three years/36,000 miles for maintenance.

2. AWD comes standard with the Genesis GV60

There are currently two trims for the Genesis GV60. The base trim is the Advanced, which generates 314 horsepower, and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Performance ups this to 429 hp and can reach speeds of 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. According to Car and Driver, you can expect a range from 235 to 248 miles per charge.

While all this is amazing, what really sticks out is the fact that all-wheel drive comes standard. This offers better traction thanks to all four wheels engaging, which makes driving in lousy weather go more smoothly.

On the flip side, according to Consumer Reports, the base trim of the BMW i4 doesn’t offer AWD. That’s the eDrive40, and while it has an impressive 335 hp and a range of 301 miles, it’s only a rear-wheel driver. To get AWD, however, you have to upgrade to the M50, which does offer it as standard. The M50 also generates 536 hp, but its range is cut back to 270 miles.

3. More cargo space means more goodies

While the Genesis GV60 is not Genesis’ largest SUV, it does offer plenty of room. Passenger volume is 101 cu. ft., and the standard cargo space is 25 cu. ft. If you lay the rear seats down, this increases to 54.7 cu. ft.

In comparison, the BMW i4 offers a mere 90 cu. ft. of passenger space, and only 10 cu. ft. of standard cargo space. If you fold the rear seats down, this increases to 45.56 cu. ft. That’s rather cramped.

Unfortunately, there is one major reason you may want to choose the BMW i4 over the Genesis GV60, and this has to do with a lack of availability. According to Consumer Reports, “Genesis says the GV60 will have “extremely limited availability” at the outset, and will only be sold at specific dealers in California, Connecticut (lucky for us, that’s where our test track is), New Jersey, and New York. That means more than 80 percent of Americans won’t be able to buy one until some point in the future.”

With that being said, the GV60 should become more readily available in the future, so if you have the opportunity to buy one, you should definitely check it out.
