As electric vehicles are becoming more popular, it’s important for buyers to consider important factors like range. An EV’s range is important because the more it has, the farther you can go. Also, you won’t have to live with range anxiety when driving on long trips.

Two popular entrants into the electric vehicle category that have a lot of range are the 2023 Genesis GV60 and the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric. The former classifies as a luxury EV, while the latter is more of a mainstream commuter. Regardless, both of them can get over 200 miles of range. But which one can go farther?

The 2023 Genesis GV60 comes in two different powertrain flavors

Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand and has been taking the premium segments by storm. Over the past five years, Genesis has released a few different luxury sedans and SUVs into various segments, all of which hold their own well against German competitors. The 2023 GV60 is the South Korean brand’s first all-electric entry, and it’s a good one.

The Genesis GV60 is brimming with luxurious features, textures, and premium comfort that’s enough to make a Tesla fanboy blush. But a premium feel isn’t the GV60’s only trick; it’s fast, too. The entry-level Advanced trim has a dual-motor setup with a 74-kW motor between the front axles and a 160-kW motor between the rear ones.

The up-level Performance trim has a dual-motor setup too, but both of its motors are 160 kW each. A 77.4 kWh battery provides power for both of these setups. In terms of range, for the most miles per charge, the GV60 Advanced is the way to go as it achieves up to EPA-estimated 248 miles of range.

The Performance trim can get up to 235 miles, but it’s much quicker as it can go from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric has less power but more range

Those looking to spend around $34,000 for an EV will find a good choice in the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric. Unlike the GV60, the Kona Electric comes standard with cloth seats and lacks some of the premium features that the Genesis has. It’s also down on power as the Kona EV is motivated by a single motor that drives the front wheels.

That 150-kW puts out 201 hp and gets the car to 60 mph from a standstill in a slower 6.4 seconds, but power isn’t the name of the game. Instead, the Kona EV balances its power with efficiency as it’s able to get up to an EPA-estimated 258 miles of range.

Which electric vehicle should you choose?

If you’re shopping for an electric vehicle and don’t want to pay a premium price tag while getting the most range, then the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric is the better choice of the two. It may only get around 10 more miles of range than the base-model GV60, but 10 miles could be an extra trip to the grocery store.

However, if you don’t mind spending your top dollar for an EV and don’t care for a Tesla Model Y, then the Genesis GV60 is an excellent choice. We really liked its performance and comfort features, which are worth the hefty price tag.
